Yesterday, Reehan Company organized a brainstorming session for Syrian experts on the reconstruction of the energy sector in Syria. This session was organized in cooperation with Syrian researcher Sultan Jalabi as part of a study funded by the German Institute for Development and Sustainability Studies (IDOS). The session followed several months of field research into the energy sector in various regions of Syria, including the northeast under the control of the Autonomous Administration, the northwest in Idlib and northern Aleppo, and the central, southern, and far western regions of the Syrian interior.
The following topics were addressed during the session:
– Technical Dimensions: What are the best technical solutions for Syria, which needs reconstruction in light of climate change?
– Economic Dimensions: What economic circles and market systems are associated with the proposed technical solution?
– Environmental Dimensions: Reconstruction in the context of the climate crisis: What can and cannot Syria bear at this stage?
– Governance Dimensions: What are the features of a governance system suitable for the proposed solutions in terms of legislation and institutional frameworks?
The session included a group of experts from diverse backgrounds in the fields of oil, economics, renewable energy, governance and policymaking, climate change, and advocacy. The results of the discussion will inform a study that will published as a policy paper designed to influence interventions funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The findings will also be shared widely among various internal stakeholders, including government institutions, universities and research centers, as well as civil society organizations whose work intersects with the energy sector.
